From 2nd to 6th November 2009, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) in association with Total E&P Vietnam and Total Professeurs Associés (TPA) organized a short course entitled “The Refining Industry and Petroleum Products”. This is the third in a series of the five short courses planed to present at the HUMG by TPA’s professors.
Nike Sneakers Professor Daniel Manginot, the course instructor, has over 30 year experience in refining industry including 13 years as a process design engineer in IFP, 9 years as a refining process coordinator and 10 followed years as a vice-president for business development in Elf. Meanwhile, the course-room was filled up with 20 participants including some staff from Petronas, PetroVietnam University Project Management Board (PVU), and HUMG, and some senior students in Oil Refining and Petrochemicals, who are studying at the HUMG.

The course was kicked off by an overview of the refining industry together with “Total at a glance”. Focus was then placed on the new challenges of the refining industry due to the volatility of crude oil prices, more severe product specifications, the crude oil resources, and sustainable development. Later on, how the refining industry has developed, i.e. new refining schemes and catalysts, and dealing with these emerged challenges were presented. The course was ended up with a very interesting section, in which the ways to professional design, operation, and start up for a processing unit were introduced.
HUMG, Total E&P Vietnam, TPA, PetroVietnam Headquarters and Petronas are highly acknowledged for invaluable funds and supports to this course.
