Seismic in Petroleum Exploration & Production

01/11/2009

A course named Seismic in Petroleum Exploration & Production was delivered between 26th and 30th October 2009 at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG). This is the second (Petroleum Geology and Seismics) among five short courses planned to delivery at the University to the end of November 2009 and early 2010.

This course is instructed by Professor Christian Chomat (TPA),  who has an experience of 24 years in Geophysics, including 18 years in the field of oil; and 12 years in management with 8 years in geosciences management (Head of Exploration and Head of Division) and 4 years in subsidiary management (Subsidiary General Manager - Middle East). From 2001 to date, he served as Director of IGAL (Geologist Engineer School).

Professor Christian Chomat, TPA (the gentleman with a grey tie in the midle of back line) and Dr. An H. Le, Head of International Cooperation Department, a delegate of the HUMG (far left) have a picture with participants of the course (View other photos).

In five days, the course participants were introduced an overview of the petroleum industry and seismic method in petroleum exploration & production. First things first, a picture of global energy was shown: is there still a future for exploration? World statistics encompassing reserves, production and consumption, the peak oil question, future projections, impact of unconventional oil, etc. The second day was an introduction of Petroleum System: source rocks, maturation, migration, fluids, reservoir, traps; and Principles of the Seismic method: acoustic impedance, influence of lithology and fluids, frequencies and resolution, P &S waves; Seismic Acquisition: offshore and onshore, sources and arrays, records; Seismic Processing: processing sequence before and after stack, deconvolution, multiples, CDP, velocity analysis, stack, migration. The last three days concentrated on Seismic Interpretation:  objectives, geometry & structural interpretation, seismic stratigraphy, direct hydrocarbon indicators, attributes, mapping, ect., and new developments and applications: Inversion, AVO/AVA, 4D & multi-component seismic. There were a number of exercises on each topic and a quiz control based on 20 multiple choice questions at the end of the course.

The course is beneficial to more than 20 participants. Some of them are young staff and final year students in Geophysics and Petroleum Geology from the University. It is also much beneficial to a significant number of participants from PetroVietnam Headquarters (Vietnam National Petroleum Group – PVN) and PVN subsidiaries such as PetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP), PVEP Bach Dang, and Research Center for Petroleum Exploration Production – Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI).

The course was funded and hosted by the HUMG, and also funded by following six sponsors:
  • Total E&P Vietnam
  • TPA
  • PetroVietnam Headquarters
  • PVEP
  • PVEP Bach Dang
  • VPI (Research Center for Petroleum Exploration Production)
